1960s Men’s Vintage Shoes
Men’s 1960s shoes took a detour from 50s classic styles to new modern “mod shoe.” Shiny black two eyelet tie shoes with a sharp pointy toe created a distinct look for business men and young mods equally.
No tie slip-on loafer shoes were even more popular in the 60s. Dressy loafers lacked much decoration while casual loafers were made of soft suede and smooth flexible leathers in neutral colors.
The two eyelet chukka boot in rough suede became a signature shoe for young men. They were considered casual shoes that could be worn with jeans or colored trousers. The hippies wore them too.
The newest boot for men in the 60s was the pull on or step-in Wellington boot. Made of smooth shiny leather they had a rugged look yet could be dressy as a winter boot. Western boots too became trendy to wear around town, not just in the country.
1960s sneakers and tennis shoes were not quite yet designed for running, instead they kept to the classic Keds Champion or Converse style with colorful canvas cloth and white rubber soles.
For summer time hippies, the leather fisherman sandal, flip flop or “Jesus sandals” were the coolest.
1970s Men’s Shoes
What kind of shoes did men wear in 70s?
In the 70s men wore slip on leather loafers, western boots, platform sole oxford shoes, suede brown sneakers, monk strap dress shoes, chukka boots, Birkenstock sandals, retro running sneakers and saddle shoes (on platform sole.)
In the 1970s men’s shoes alternated between dressy two tone platform oxfords and step-in boots and casual earthy mocs and loafers.
Men’s 70s dress shoes included white leather monk strap loafers, shiny black oxfords, and dress boots. The throw back to the 1920s and 1930s meant more dress shoes came in decorative wingtip patterns and broguing. Dark two tones combinations as well as classic black and white wingtip shoes were trendy again.
Speaking of trends what makes 70s men’s shoes iconic is the high heel and sole of Platform shoes. These were especially popular men’s disco dancing shoes. White, black, silver or gold platform shoes got down at the disco every week but they are not the only shoes. Western boots, pull on boots, white loafers, and wingtip oxfords were also worn at the disco.
Men’s 70s casual shoes embraced the hippie culture for earth tone suede chukka boots, moccasin, “earth shoes” and loafers.
The ultimate casual shoes for men in the 1970s was the sneaker. Running sneakers came in bold colors and thick white soles. Retro sneakers are back in fashion now!
