Keeping warm year round, especially in cool weather, required women to wear socks instead of thin stockings. In the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, women wore knee high knit socks in winter and short-cuff ankle socks in summer. White was standard for ankle socks but other pastels, bright hues, and small patterns adorned socks. Some patterns for sportswear such as argyle, plaid and novelty designs made colorful statements.
In the 1970s and 1980s many women’s socks were taken from little girls collections. Lace edge socks, scallop edge socks, floral prints socks in girly colors. The 1980s made layered 2 or 3 socks colored popular. You cant forget the scrunch sock or slouch socks in the 80s too. They were practically leg warmers! Learn more about vintage socks history.
