1920s dresses featured a drop waist for most of the 1920s (natural waist for the earlier 1920-1922). One of my favorite techniques for making almost any dress into a 1920s dress is to add a belt or sash around the hips to create the drop waist effect. Most 1920s dresses came with a matching belt but many did not, inviting the owner to accessorize her dress with a leather belt, chain belt, tie belt, or beaded belt. We found a few options for 1920s style belts and sashes online. We like to buy Skinny Scarves or Wide Wedding dress sashes for most tie belts, and a skinny belt (in a size to fit around the hips) for casual clothing. Chain, bead or tassel-end belts are perfect for eveningwear.
