The fitness as fashion wave took place in the 1970s. Suddenly men and women were working out, joining running clubs, setting up a home gym, playing a round of tennis, or taking a dance class. Each activity had its own style of ’70s workout clothes. There were tracksuits for running in winter, dolphin running shorts in summer, leotards and tights for women gymnasts and of course, retro sneakers for all. ’70s workout clothes are identified by the stripes on the chest, shoulders, cuffs, sleeves and tall socks. See the pictures below (click here to jump).
In the 1980s, fitness fashion went a little crazy with over the top neon colors and splashing patterns. Full body lycra unitards with a leotard over that, a tye-dye crop sweatshirt, and a pair of fuzzy leggings were one unforgettable ’80s workout outfit. Windbreaker jackets were popular with men and women. Wrestling singlets for men made taking aerobic classes trendy.
