In the early 60s, the dresses were still in the swing dress or pencil dress style from the 1950s, except now they were knee length and not quite too snug fitting.
In the middle of the 1960s is where we see all the new iconic 60s dress styles such as the shift or skimmer dress, smock dress, tunic dress, mini dress (mid thigh high), tent dress (also called a swing dress), jumper dress, drop waist dress, sun dress, and shirt dress. Party dresses were sometimes called hostess dresses or cocktail dresses.

What colors were worn in the 1960s?
The 1960s saw color trends change every few years. It was a busy decade for evelving fashions. In the early 60s light pasetsl, espcially baby pink, were trendy. In the mid 60s is when we see the bright psychedelic colors – sunny yellow, bright pink, lime green, orange, teal blue, sky blue and deep purple. In the winter as well as the late 60s, colors went to earth tones – beige, olive green, navy blue, mustard yellow, gold, black and white or cream.
What to wear with a 60s dress?
A pair of tights or pantyhose to hide 60s leg hair is a must (this was before woman started shaving their legs.) Shoes would be low kitten heels or dressy flats. You could wear white go go go boots too.
You could add some very mod jewelry or sunglasses or keep it classy with a cloche hat. Gloves were out of fashion but a scarf tied around the neck was very chic.
