The 1970s Victorian bustle era created new fashions without hoop skirts. Padded or wire bustles held gathered fabric from behind. The early bustle era feature gowns with a full front, layered overskirts and wide bustled back with lots of trimming.
The late bustle era gradually narrowed the dress to a flat front with smaller round bustle at the back. This gave way to the late 1870s and 1880s natural from fashion that moved the bustle to the floor with dress trains from the knee down. The silhouette was long and lean yet still curvy.
Beside Victorian bustle dresses, sewing patterns for bustle cages, bustle pads, and lingerie are plentiful. These are a handful of the most popular Victorian bustle era sewing patterns.
