Women’s vests (waistcoats) have been a part of fashion longer than you probably realize. They were trendy in the Victorian era, paired with matching skirts. Again as part of sportswear going into the turn the century (Gibson Girl look!) The 1920s wore knitted sweater vests just like men while the 1930s preferred the suit style vest. The 1940s and 1950s returned to the sweater vest for warmth and fashionable layering. Solid colors as well as patterns such as argyle and fair isle have repeated from the 1960s onward. The current ’90s revival is seeing cropped or oversized argyle sweater vests back in fashion now.
