The time of Jane Austen is known as the Regency Era. It was a brief fashion period, 1810 – 1820, that created long column gowns with a high empire waistline and modest sleeved tops. Pair a good dress with pointy toe ballet flats or lace up country boots and a bonnet hat, and your Regency costume is complete.
Most women will sew or commission a costume for a Regency event to create the most accurate look. For women who don’t want to go that route, there are ways to DIY a Jane Austen dress using new clothing.
Begin with an empire waist dress, preferably with sleeves. A sleeveless dress can be used if you either layer a crop jacket or sweater over it, or put a simple blouse under it. Adding a ribbon sash adds a bit of color and period styling.
For accessories, consider a long scarf draped over your arms, gloves, and a bonnet hat or wide brim cloche decorated in ribbons, feathers, and flowers.
