In November 2013, my local art museum hosted a display of Toulouse Lautrec art and threw a fabulous Moulin Rouge/ Masquerade themed costume event. Naturally, we attended the event in costume because that is just what we do. I had so much fun with my last Steampunk Costume, and seeing all the black and white striped clothing in the stores last week inspired me to create a Moulin Rouge meets Steampunk costume.
When I saw this Ringmaster themed corset at Hips and Curves I knew I had to have it as my focal point. I like how I don’t have to be a can can girl to still be part of the Moulin Rouge party. Female Ringmaster? Why not!
I am not plus size, which is what Hips and Curves specializes in, so I had to take it in just a bit. It comes with the a black mini lace skirt which I didn’t wear, instead choosing a layered chiffon ruffled skirt that I bustled in the back. I considered some longer red and black petticoats locally that I may use next time (a little more length is a good thing). I also really love the caged hoop skirt from Hips and Curves. I think I can make one myself if I can find or dye black boning. Its such an odd thing to wear over a petticoat but it looks so awesome. I love it!
I picked up a pair of black and white leggings that could provide all the coverage I want, plus the black and white stripes that were so popular with Moulin Rouge dancers. Add to this my Victorian boots, Steampunk mini top hat, black lace gloves, and some jewelry, and I think I may have a great costume. What do you think?
