1950 style clothing is back in fashion. Everywhere I look, I see elements of 50s style dresses, shirts, and pants in new modern clothing as well vintage reproduction clothing. If you are new to 50s fashion, you may not know what to look for when you shop. Here is my quick guide to buying new 1950 style clothing or pin up dresses online:
1950s Style Dresses
Halter tops and swinging tea length skirts are a summer style icon of fashions in the 1950s. These casual, comfortable, and colorful dresses are very flattering on all body types. The side tying sash accentuates the ideal ’50s nipped in waist. Perfect for picnics in the park or strolls on the beach boardwalk.
I’m not sure how popular cherry designs were in the 1950s but they are certainly popular on 1950s inspired clothing today. From retro pin ups to the rockabilly music crowd, red and white dresses, shirts, and shoes with cherry prints are in. This halter top dress with a gathered bust features a skirt that wears a bit shorter then they would have in the ’50s but is more ideal for today’s vintage followers.
You may have heard of a style of dress called “house dress” or “swing dress.” These styles of 1950s dresses had full skirts worn with a puffy petticoat underneath. The top usually had mid length sleeves or shorter cap sleeves (which are so cute!). Petticoats are something modern bodies are not used to wearing, but luckily they are just as cute to wear without them. Many ’50s party dresses can be found at Unique-Vintage.com
Full skirted dresses were not the only fashion icon of the ’50s. Two piece suit dresses were common in the ’40s, but became slimmer and more form fitting in the ’50s. One piece dresses also became more form fitting, especially for evening wear and naughty pinup models. These dresses are often called Cocktail, Wiggle, Pin Up, Sheath or Bombshell dresses. Several online stores specialize in these designs.
